George Putin, George Obama
A Dress
Rehearsal for the Iran Thing
Majid Ali,
M.D.
My wife and I visited Russia
Twice. If invited to live there, our answer: No,
thank you. If invited again, we would say: No, No,
and No.
In September 2013, Secretary
Kerry’s compassionately and repeatedly played in
Congress video clips of Syrian children gased to
death. I was most inspired by his sensitivity and
dedication to human rights. Let us pray that he will
demonstrate similar compassion for Iraqi children
killed and mutilated by American missiles, bombs,
and bullets. He will also show those videos to
Congress with equal frequency.
Time is a trickster. How could I
have imagined in 1966, when I arrived in New York
that a time will come when I will write about George
Vladimir Putin and George Hussain Obama. Consider
the following quote from an op-ed piece in The New
York Times by Vladimir George Putin , the president
of Russia:
"The
world reacts by asking: if you cannot count on
international law, then you must find other ways to
ensure your security. Thus a growing number of
countries seek to acquire weapons of mass
destruction. This is logical: if you have the bomb,
no one will touch you. We are left with talk of the
need to strengthen nonproliferation, when in reality
this is being eroded."
I wonder how George Washington
might have commented on George Putin’s words. Don’t
trend on me!—were these not the words on the first
American flag?
Now to President George Hussain
Obama. Since Secretary Kerry is a mouthpiece of the
president, I was most inspired by his sensitivity
and dedication to human rights when video clips of
Syrian children gased to death were played over and
over in Congress and the national TV channels. Let
us pray that the George Obama will respond to George
Putin by compassionately playing the videos of Iraqi
children killed and mutilated by American missiles,
bombs, and bullets. I wonder how King George might
have reacted to George Obama’s "targeted military
‘non-pinprick’ attack on Syria." Or how George
Washington might responded to the pinprick notion.
But then I am just a doctor. I am
too simpleminded to weigh in on the matters
understood only by the likes of King George, the
Third and George Washington. George Obama’s military
—not known for its pinpricks—will use sophisticated
weapons to which Syrian children are immune. Science
does work miracles, doesn’t it?
After I wrote the above, in a dream I saw
strolling on the rolling greens of Camp David, the
four Georges. The two senior Georges seemed to
admonish the junior two Georges. When the older two
walked away, one of the younger Georges winked at
the other and whispered, "The Syria thing will be
just a dress rehearsal for the real Iran thing."
