Oxygen Models of Diseases
Majid Ali, M.D.
My Oxygen Model of Diseases are
extensions of my Oxygen Model of Health and Disease.
It is a unifying model that explains all aspects of
diverse diseases—causes, clinical course,
consequences, and control—on the basis of disturbed
oxygen function. The most important among these
compromised and/or blocked functions are: (1) oxygen
signaling; (2) oxygen’s ATP energy generation; (3)
oxygen’s detergent functions; (4) oxygen’s cellular
detox functions; (5) oxygen-regulated cell membrane
and matrix functions; (6) oxygen’s cellular repair
roles.
The Oxygen Model
of Diseases provide a simple model that allows
physicians to reduce complexities of diverse
clinical syndromes into a workable simplicity.
These models predict that ongoing
research will reveal that components of acidosis
(excess acidity), oxidosis (increased oxidative
stress), and CUD (clotting-unclotting dysequilibrium)
will be found to play important roles in the
pathology and clinical features of various diseases.
Darwin’s Core Tenet of Natural Selection
The strength of Darwin’s core
tenet of natural selection is that in biology so
little explains so much. The core strength of The
Oxygen Model of Disease, in my view, is that in
medicine so little explains so much.
Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) published Origin
of Species (1869) to propose a spectacular
simplicity: all species evolved from a common
primordial ancestor, and so are related to each
other. During my work for thirty five years in
surgery and pathology over thirty years I wondered
if there were a similar simplicity about the origin
of diseases. I opened my book
Oxygen and Aging (2000) with the following
words: oxygen is the organizing principle of human
biology and governs the aging process. The core
tenet of my Oxygen Model of Disease is that the
origin of all diseases can be ultimately traced to
oxygen-related molecular and cellular injury, and so
are related to each other.
Strong claims require strong evidence. To support
The Oxygen Model of Disease, I marshaled an enormous
body of clinical, microscopic, and experimental
evidence in
Darwin and Dysox
Trilogy
(2009), the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth volumes of
my textbook entitled The Principles and Practice of
Integrative Medicine.
Darwin’s message for us is: no part can be
understood without understanding its relationships
with the whole. His message to physicians today
would have been simple as well: no disease of any
organ can be understood or prevented without
understanding the relationships of that organ with
other organs of the body-holism and integration in
structural and functional aspects of the various
organ-systems of the body, in simple words.

Oxygen's
Three Legged Throne
In the tutorial entitled "Oxygen's
Three-legged Throne,"
I present a unifying model of origin of diseases.
Briefly, in this model the trio of toxicities of
foods that cause the molecular trio of excess
acidity (acidosis), increased free radical activity
(oxidosis), and clotting-unclotting dysequilibrium
(CUD), which disrupt the oxygen order of the human
body. The resulting trio of 3-M states-greased cell
membranes, gummed matrix, and gutted mitochondria-is
the origin of all diseases.

Cardiologists do not seek solutions to the problems
of coronary heart disease in the problems of the
bowel. Nor do kidney specialists who simply watch
rising creatinine levels until they consider the
patient to be ready for dialysis or kidney
transplant. Doctors treat
insulin toxicity
of
Type 2 diabetes with drugs that further increase
the degrees of insulin toxicity, without considering
issues of greased cell membranes, gummed matrix, and
gutted mitochondria that cause insulin toxicity.
Dermatologists, to my knowledge, never address mold
and food allergy, gut fermentation, production of
mold toxins, and the leaky gut state - the
underlying problems of
psoriasis - when they treat the disease with
steroids, methotrexate (a chemo drug), or Embrel (a
drug that blocks a crucial healing mechanism).
Neurologists do not look for solutions to the
problems of memory loss in dementia and Alzheimer's
disease in the dysfunctions of the
liver.
I strongly recommend that readers
undertake a study of my
free YouTube self-learning ten-part video course
in which I present basic information on energy for
health and healing. It explains the scientific facts
of energy and metabolism in simple words. The
important points are illustrated with
easy-to-understand examples and analogies. Click

Below, I apply The Oxygen Model of Disease to the
origin of diseases of the heart, kidneys, skin, and
brain to illustrate the enormous explanatory and
therapeutic power of the oxygen model to the origin
of diseases.
The Heart
A water pump functions well when it pumps clean
water. An air pump functions well
when it pumps clean air. A blood pump is also
expected to function well when it pumps clean blood.
The heart is a blood pump. The blood thickens and
becomes "dirty" when toxins are absorbed in excess
from the bowel and the liver is unable to remove
them efficiently (including acids produced in excess
by stress states. All elements that either cause
excess production of toxins in the blood or
inefficient removal by the liver are oxygen-related.
I explain these crucial relations in tutorials
devoted to cardiovascular disorders. For
professional readers, I offer incontrovertible
microscopic and biochemical proof of these
statements in Darwin and Dysox Trilogy (2009).
The Kidneys
A water filter functions well when it filters clean
water. An air filter functions well when it filters
clean air. A blood filter is also expected to
function well when it filters clean blood. The
kidneys are blood filters. They are blocked and
injured when thickened and “dirty” blood flows
through them. All elements that pollute and thicken
blood are oxygen-related. These subjects are
presented at length in tutorials devoted to the
reversal of kidney failure. For professional
readers, I offer incontestable microscopic and
biochemical proof of these statements in Darwin and
Dysox Trilogy (2009).
Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is an insulin toxicity problem. In
my crank-crank-shaft model of
insulin resistance,
the pancreas produces excess insulin to overcome
resistance of the insulin receptor to the hormone.
Simply stated, the crank of insulin fails to move
(activate) the crank-shaft of insulin receptors
embedded in the "hardened" cell membranes—the
crank-shaft is rusted, turned, and twisted, so to
speak—rendering insulin dysfunctional. In my
The Grease and Detergent Model of Disease,
the cell
membranes, matrix, and mitochondria are covered with
"cellular grease": due to insufficient detergent
functions of the body. The primary detergent in the
body is oxygen. So, in the final analysis, diabetes
is an oxygen problem.
The Skin
As roots are to roses, so the bowel to the skin. I
have never seen a patient with
psoriasis who did not have mold and food
allergy, gut fermentation, production of mold
toxins, and the leaky gut state. The skin of nearly
all my patients with the disorder cleared when these
issues—first and foremost, related to
oxygen homeostasis—were
effectively addressed (see tutorials on the subject
for details).
As roots are to roses, so the bowel to the brain.
Need I say more about neurologists and their drugs
for memory disorders?
A tree analogy is often used to illustrate Darwin’s
central idea of the development of species from a
common ancestor. In the accompanying figure, I
present a “tree of disease origin” to schematically
illustrate the core point of The Oxygen Model of
Disease and my unifying model of the origin of all
diseases.
ORIGIN
OF DISEASES
The Oxygen Model of Disease
Seven Levels of Understanding
First, oxygen is the organizing influence of human
biology and governs the aging process.
It is also a molecular Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde par
excellence, ushering life with one sleight of hand
and terminating it with another.
Second, human biology is an enormous web of webs, a
vast and intricate network of energetic-molecular
pathways. Everything in that web is connected to
everything else, and all are related to oxygen.
Third, the webs of human biology form a panoramic
kaleidoscope. A singular change within that
kaleidoscope causes everything to change.
Fourth, spontaneity of oxidation (loss of energy and
decay) in nature-sustained by oxygen above all
else-provides the primary metabolic drive for all
human life processes. It also assures that no
oxygen-utilizing life form lives forever.
Fifth, persistent and progressive oxidosis sets the
stage for dysoxygenosis-a state of dysfunctional
cellular oxygen metabolism (dysox) resulting from an
impaired function of enzymatic pathways involved
with oxygen utilization.
Sixth, the spiritual serenity that is essential for
long-term good health; and
Seventh, chronic anger and sadness that fan the
fires of acidosis (excess acidity), oxidosis (excess
oxyradical activity), and dysox.
The
Mind-Body-Spirit Trio
The so-called mind-body-spirit trio is an artifact
of thinking. I have never seen anyone dissect a
human and delineate where the body ends and the mind
begins, nor where the mind ends and the spiritual
begins. The mind cannot ordain healing on injured
tissues. Preoccupation with clever thinking, in
reality, is an expression of our inability to sense,
feel, and know the wholeness of the human condition.
The issues of chronic anger and aspects of spiritual
serenity are presented in tutorials devoted to these
subjects.
All clinical work by a practitioner of integrative
medicine, in my view, should be based on a clear
understanding of the above seven oxygen-governed
energetic-molecular dynamics of human biology. This
is the primary clinical importance of the oxygen
model of origin of diseases. Some doctors might
protest that evidence of all statements in this
tutorial is not established. This does not
discourage me since new evidence of Darwin's
evolution by natural selection continues to be
unearthed even now. I do think the same will hold
for evidence of the "oxygen view of disease origin"
as well.
