Viruses and Viral Infections
An Ecologic Perspective
Majid Ali, M.D.
Nature's intelligence design does not acknowledge
human notions of fixedness in human energy systems,
chemistry, and reproductive functions. In the
eternal predator-prey dance of life and death.
Nature confers biochemical redundancy for its
creations for survival advantages, but only up to a
point. When its creatures veer off the assigned
course beyond the limits of equilibrium, Nature
plays its other cards to restore that equilibrium.
Humans have freedom to alter ecologic conditions up
to certain limits. Beyond those limits, Nature's
lowly life forms—viruses, in present context—are
given the responsibility of bringing down the house
of cards of haughty humans. In the case of the bird
flu, Nature's corrective action is sometimes
implemented with seemingly trivial changes in the
structure of one of the viral proteins. Substitution
of a single amino acid in the protein
configuration, for instance, can turn a docile virus
into a screaming monster.
In the various tutorials on immunology and
infectious diseases, I invite readers to consider
observable natural phenomena within broader ecologic
contexts, rather than narrow-focused
one-bug-one-disease-one-drug models that pervades
current medical thinking. Below is a list of
important tutorial subjects.
