The Skin
Majid Ali, M.D.
Nature evolved two primary
interfaces between the human body and its
environments: the bowel and the skin. As an
afterthought, many epochs later, evolution created
the third interface: the brain. In the context of
health and healing, the principle folly of the human
endeavor in modern times is that it pointlessly
exalts the mind and suffers severely by ignoring the
other two interfaces. Two primary lessons which my
patients have taught me in this context are:
* As
roots are to roses, so the bowel to the skin.
It is profoundly ironic that
neither neurologists nor dermatologists are
interested in the bowel. Their patients pay an
enormous price for their neglect of the bowel. In
this series of tutorials, I offer unifying oxygen
models of skin health and diseases. The focus on
oxygen signaling, oxygen’s detergent functions, and
oxygen-driven cellular energetics allows the readers
not only a holistic and integrated view of
understanding this organ but also provides rational
and scientifically sound approaches to restoring
skin health.
Skin, it seems redundant to say,
is the outer covering of the body. It is strong and
resilient, and guards all internal organs of the
body. I present the natomy and physiology of the
skin in tutorials devoted to these subjects.
